bespoke marble object
From the Greek for form — the thing before it has a name. Morphe is a composed marble object: two pieces of stone, met and fixed in permanent relationship. The joint that would elsewhere be hidden is here the subject — the precise line where stone meets stone, where the atelier's hand is most legible.
In most objects, the joint is the thing to be concealed — the place where craft falls short of perfection. In Morphe, it is reversed. The line where two pieces of marble are brought into contact becomes the object's central statement: a seam of absolute precision, held without adhesive, relying entirely on the flatness of the cut and the weight of the stone. To look closely at the joint is to understand how Morphe was made.
Morphe takes its name from the Greek — not the word for beautiful, or for useful, or for old, but simply for form: the shape of something prior to any description of what it is. This object resists categorisation in the same way. It is not a tray, not a paperweight, not a bookend — though it may quietly serve as any of these. It is, first and entirely, a composed form in stone.
Morphe is offered in Bianco Carrara, Calacatta, and Nero Marquina. The stone selection determines the character of the joint: on Carrara, the veining reads continuously across both pieces, as though the form were always whole. On Calacatta, the bold movement of the mineral creates a dramatic interruption at the seam. On Nero Marquina, the joint nearly disappears into the dark ground — present only to those who look closely. Each stone makes a different object.

By default, both pieces of Morphe are selected from the same slab, so that the veining reads continuously across the joint — a single geological event, interrupted and reassembled. On request, we can select contrasting slabs for the two pieces, creating an object where the joint becomes a dialogue between two distinct moments in stone. Both approaches are available; the choice depends on the effect you want the joint to produce.
The standard Morphe is dry-joined — the two pieces rest on each other through weight alone, held by the precision of the cut surfaces. This is a traditional lapidary approach and one that we consider part of the object's character: the joint holds because it is flat and true, not because it has been glued. For clients who prefer a permanently fixed form — for instance for a high-traffic setting — we can bond the pieces with a coloured stone adhesive matched to your selected material.
Morphe is designed primarily as a sculptural presence, but it lends itself naturally to quiet secondary uses: a small catchall on a desk or console, a counterweight for papers or books, a thing to hold while thinking. The honed finish is durable and easily maintained. We include a stone care card with every piece, covering routine cleaning and the periodic resealing that any natural marble benefits from.
Yes — natural marble is never repeated. Before cutting, we photograph the candidate slab sections and share them with you for approval. This is particularly meaningful for Morphe, where the relationship between veining and joint is central to the object's reading. We will present the sections in context so you can see how the mineral movement will behave at the seam before any stone is cut.

Every Morphe begins with a slab selection — photographed, shared, and approved before a single cut is made. Inquire to discuss stone, finish, whether the pieces are matched or contrasting, and any bespoke requirements for your space.
